  • Any permanent change in DNA
  • Can occur at multiple levels
    • Genome: most common. Due to chromosome missegregation
    • Chromosome: due to chromosome rearrangements
    • Gene: least common, mainly due to the activity of DNA repair enzymes (repair 99.9% of all replication errors)

  • Can also be caused by extrinsic factors:
    • UV or ionising radiation
    • Chemicals
