  • The main route of endocytosis in most cells is the clathrin-mediated route
  • Clathrin is a large protein
    • Lines the inner surface of the plasma membrane to form a coated pit
    • This pit then buds into the cell to form a vesicle
  • Latrunculin B plays a role in relaxing actin to allow the pit to move
  • Once the vesicle is intracellular it is termed an endosome
  • Lysosomes are the last compartment of the endosome pathway
    • Break down waste products
    • pH of 4.8
    • Contain hydrolytic enzymes manufactured in the ER
      • Collagenase
      • Hyaluronidase 
      • Sulfatases, phosphatases etc...
