Get accessCreation of two gametes with haploid chromosome content (the gametes are genetically unique)
- Only occurs in eukaryotes
- Two stage process
- Meiosis I: First stage is similar to mitosis and involves a prolonged prophase
At one point (pachytene), chromatids of the chromosomes exchange material (crossover) further ensuring random assortment of paternal and maternal homologues
- Anaphase I is the most error prone phase
Gives rise to gametes that contain only one representative of each homologous pair of chromosomes
